Watermelon?

That looks like a watermelon, wouldn't you agree? What? You think it is orange? Nah... you just need to adjust the color of your monitor. After all, you might recall from an earlier post that we were experimenting with growing watermelon this summer. Truly, as much as we enjoy digging in the dirt, we have always grown flowers... not food. For Eric, this endeavor of growing melon was an important one. He wanted to be able to grow and eat something before he was 35.

About three weeks ago, Josie looked at the four melons that were growing round and green and said, "Momma, those look like cantaloupe." I didn't completely disagree with her, but told her that in a couple weeks when the melons were ripe, they would look more like watermelons. So then we went on vacation. And then we came home and investigated the garden. It was surprising, really. For what we saw were three full-grown CANTALOUPE! Josie apparently knows her fruit!

So here are pictures of Josie with two of the melons... to give you a concept of size.

And finally, here is Eric cutting into and enjoying his melon. His verdict... not a lot of taste. Funny enough, there IS a reason for that. We watered them like they were watermelon... which is to say we watered a lot! Cantaloupe, on the other hand, should not be watered a lot as they get more mature... they lose taste (I learned this today surfing the net!). So... I guess it pays to know what you have planted! Never-the-less, we have successfully grown and eaten something from our own garden. Perhaps next year we will really grow watermelon... or maybe pumpkins... or peppers... or...
Oh...
on another note, Lucy and Norah are getting quite friendly. Any guesses on how long these tranquil moments will last??

I agree that she is looking rather brunette... that was my vote! Time will tell.
