Snow Days

We have been blessed/cursed with a few snow days in this part of the world. Brings back great memories on sledding down "the big hill" that landed us onto the frozen pond in upstate Indiana. Memories of even bigger hills for bigger kids with faster sleds in my years outside of Chicago. Snowball fights, snowmen, donuts in parking lots (no Mom, not me!), and industrial windshield scrapers.

In this part of the world, folks aren't as accustomed to snow days. Yeah, there is some sledding, but not everyone automatically owns a sled because it isn't guaranteed you are going to be able to use it each year. Ponds never get frozen enough to sled onto on skate on. Snow men are fairly puny and don't stick around long. And yet, when it snows, the world stops and the wide-eyed wonder of our children takes over. This week, our children had two snow days off from school (following two and a half days the week before!). With each day, they bundled up in snow pants that really shouldn't have fit based on how old they were, boots, hats and mittens and braved the crazy cold weather. The snow was rotten for snow balls. Even worse for snowmen. But for these girls, it was the perfect snow for snow angels and sliding into piles of the white fluffy stuff.

I remember a snow day on a big fast snow hill that landed me in the ER getting stitches. No wonder I don't like winter! HA!
