As a parent and a pastor, there is really nothing more rewarding than when your child seems to "get" a theological moment. As I was driving to church with the girls on Easter Sunday, having already torn apart the Easter baskets, the girls were fairly quiet. Suddenly, from the back of the van, Josie hollers, "MOM!"
As I ask, "What?" and look around for a deer or something about to run into the street, causing Josie to yell, Josie simply says, "Today Jesus is alive! Today he rised! (we will worry about words and grammar later... she IS only 6)." I complemented her understanding of the day when she added, unprovoked, "And that is better than candy!" Wow. She gets it. Or at least, she talks like she gets it. But for this pastor mom, that was good enough -- my day was made!
That little moment happened in the midst of a big Easter weekend for us. MeMa and Papa were up, along with cousin Anna. Anna is 3 now and Josie had a blast playing with her. They spent much of the weekend playing dress-up, decorating eggs, decorating cookies, eating cookies, etc. MeMa kept the girls good and busy while Eric and Papa worked on some odd jobs outside.
Easter morning comes early at our house... even earlier if you try to fit in any of the Easter hoopla before church. Typically, our tradition is that the Easter bunny delivers the baskets early, but then swings back by while we are at church to hide the Easter eggs. There is just NO WAY to get an egg hunt done before church! So far, there seem to be no issues with the fact that the bunny makes a second stop by the house. Heck, it means more candy, so I would think Josie is smart enough not to take issue with it!
After Easter worship services, the egg hunt, lunch, and a farewell to the family, we are snuggled in bed for our Easter snooze. I gotta say... whether there are extra worship services or not, Easter just takes on a different pace at the churches and when nap time comes, it is a glorious event. I would dare to say, even better than candy!
